CRISFIELD — Despite a determined defensive effort and an early lead, the Crisfield High School boys soccer team fell to Wicomico High School, 3-1, as the visitors controlled possession and kept constant pressure on the Crabbers throughout the match.
Wicomico spent much of the game on the attack, forcing Crisfield into a defensive posture for extended stretches. Goalkeeper Carter Marsh faced a relentless barrage of shots and turned away numerous scoring opportunities while keeping the Crabbers within striking distance.
Against the run of play, Crisfield struck first after 17 minutes of hard-fought action. Connor Haney found the back of the net to give the Crabbers a 1-0 advantage and provide a spark for the home side.
The lead held through halftime, but Wicomico’s persistent offensive pressure finally paid off midway through the second half. Just 12½ minutes into the period, Wicomico netted the equalizer to pull even at 1-1.
The visitors took the lead later in the half when Henry Hernandez converted a penalty kick after Crisfield was whistled for a handball inside the penalty area. Following the goal, officials consulted and issued a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct on Hernandez related to the sequence of events after the penalty kick.
Wicomico added an insurance goal when Snyder Joseph finished a scoring opportunity to extend the lead to 3-1 and put the match out of reach.
While the final score favored Wicomico, Crisfield’s defense battled throughout the contest, anchored by Marsh’s efforts in goal and Haney’s lone tally that briefly gave the Crabbers the upper hand.
