SALISBURY — Big plays, momentum swings, and a goal-line defensive stand highlighted Friday night’s matchup between the Wicomico High School Indians and the Parkside High School Rams at Wicomico Stadium, as Wicomico secured a hard-fought 28-14 victory.
Parkside wasted little time making its presence felt. On the opening possession, the Rams broke loose for a spectacular 65-yard rushing touchdown, setting the tone early and taking a 7-0 lead after the extra point.
The Indians responded immediately.
Showing resilience and offensive firepower, Wicomico answered on its next drive with a long touchdown pass that electrified the home crowd. The extra point tied the game at 7-7, shifting momentum back toward the Indians.
That momentum continued to build as Wicomico found success on both sides of the ball. The Indians added another touchdown and then capitalized after a punt return set up excellent field position. Just a few plays later, Wicomico found the end zone again, extending its lead to 28-7 after the successful extra point.
Despite the growing deficit, Parkside refused to back down.
The Rams delivered one of the night’s most exciting moments when Logan Swift (No. 4) fielded a kickoff and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, weaving through defenders before breaking free for the score. The return injected life into the Parkside sideline and cut Wicomico’s lead to 28-14.
With approximately 4:30 remaining in the first half, Parkside appeared to gain even more momentum. After Wicomico put together a short drive, Lavontaye Raynor (No. 6) forced a fumble that gave the Rams possession at their own 43-yard line.
Parkside looked poised to capitalize, but the opportunity slipped away. A fumble on second down stalled the drive just before the two-minute mark, slowing what had become a promising stretch for the Rams.
The Parkside defense continued to play well, quickly forcing Wicomico off the field and regaining possession at the 35-yard line with 1:30 left before halftime. However, penalties proved costly. A block-in-the-back penalty and another infraction on fourth down put the Rams behind the chains and prevented them from adding points before the break. Wicomico eventually kneeled out the final seconds, carrying its 28-14 lead into halftime.
The second half featured one of the game’s defining moments.
Parkside methodically marched down the field, controlling the clock and moving the ball deep into Wicomico territory. The Rams reached the one-yard line and appeared on the verge of cutting the deficit to a single score.
Instead, the Wicomico defense rose to the occasion.
The Indians held firm, stopping Parkside on four consecutive attempts from the one-yard line and forcing a turnover on downs. The goal-line stand preserved Wicomico’s two-touchdown advantage and effectively became the turning point of the second half.
While Parkside found success through the air at times, the Rams leaned heavily on the running game during key stretches. Wicomico’s defense consistently appeared prepared for those rushing attempts, limiting explosive gains and preventing sustained scoring drives when it mattered most.
In the end, Wicomico’s fast start, special teams execution, and clutch defensive plays proved to be the difference. Parkside showed determination throughout the contest and generated several momentum shifts, but the Indians’ ability to capitalize on opportunities and protect their lead carried them to a 28-14 victory.
Final Score:
Wicomico 28 – Parkside 14
