CRISFIELD — A fast start by the visiting Queen Anne’s County Lions proved to be the difference Wednesday evening as the Lions defeated the Crisfield Crabbers 2-1 in a hard-fought varsity field hockey matchup at Crisfield High School.

Queen Anne’s County established early pressure and controlled much of the opening minutes, keeping the ball in the attacking end and forcing the Crabber defense to stay busy. The pressure paid off 8:21 into the first quarter when Karli Pritchard (No. 1) found the back of the cage to give the Lions an early 1-0 advantage.

Crisfield’s defense settled in after the opening goal, and the Crabbers began to find more possession as the quarter progressed. The home team generated momentum during the final minute of the opening period but was unable to create a quality scoring opportunity before the horn sounded.

The second quarter featured a more balanced battle for field position, with both teams trading possession through the midfield. However, Queen Anne’s County capitalized on one of its breakthrough runs. At the 8:15 mark of the quarter, Pritchard struck again, scoring her second goal of the evening and extending the Lions’ lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.

Crabbers strong after the break

Coming out of the break, Crisfield delivered its strongest stretch of the contest. The Crabbers controlled possession for much of the third quarter and consistently applied pressure in the attacking circle.

Their effort finally produced a breakthrough 8:47 into the third quarter. Alliana Raab (No. 6) showcased impressive skill, spinning and firing a backward shot toward the cage and Mya Pendry (No. 9) finished it off to cut the deficit to 2-1 and energize the home crowd.

Crisfield’s dominance continued throughout much of the third period. While Queen Anne’s County managed only three distinct drives into Crabber territory during the quarter, the Lions were unable to turn any of those opportunities into additional goals. The Crisfield defense remained strong, limiting chances and keeping the game within reach.

Lions remain on top

The fourth quarter was evenly played, with both teams spending significant time on offense. Crisfield continued searching for the equalizer, but Queen Anne’s County’s early two-goal cushion ultimately stood up. Despite a determined comeback effort by the Crabbers, the Lions held on for the 2-1 victory.
