POCOMOKE, MD — Championship games are rarely about style points. They are about resilience, execution, and finding a way to rise in the biggest moments. On Wednesday evening at Pusey Field at Byrd Stadium, the Pocomoke Warriors did exactly that, defeating the Crisfield Crabbers 2-1 in the MPSSAA Field Hockey 1A East II Regional Championship to earn a spot in the State Quarterfinals.
From the opening whistle, both teams brought the intensity expected of a regional title matchup. The first quarter ended scoreless, but not for a lack of opportunities. Crisfield goalkeeper Katelynn Coleman (00) stood tall under pressure, turning away several dangerous chances with diving saves. Time and again, the Warriors tested the cage, only to find Coleman and her leg guards in the way.
The deadlock was finally broken midway through the second quarter when Autumn Riggin (10) found the back of the cage to put Pocomoke ahead 1-0. The goal provided a spark, but the Warriors’ standout play was not limited to the offensive end. Throughout the first half, Riggin and others continued to make her presence known across the field, helping generate scoring opportunities while also contributing on the defensive side of the ball.
By halftime, the atmosphere matched the stakes. Both squads played with urgency and determination, battling for every loose ball and refusing to give an inch. With only one goal separating the teams, the championship remained very much in the balance.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Pocomoke was quickly tested in the third quarter. Five minutes into the half, Mya Pendry (9) found the back of the cage for Crisfield, knotting the score at 1-1 and swinging momentum back toward the Crabbers. The equalizer set the stage for a tense battle as both teams searched for the go-ahead goal with a trip to the State Quarterfinals on the line.
As the second half unfolded, Pocomoke’s pressure continued to mount. One of the game’s pivotal moments came when Chloe Daniels (7) used exceptional stick work to carry the ball deep into Crisfield territory. The sequence led to a penalty corner, giving the Warriors another chance to capitalize with 4:53 remaining in the quarter, scoring what proved to be a crucial goal.
Daniels and Chloe Holland (16) spent much of the evening controlling possession and keeping the pressure squarely on the Crabbers. Their ability to maintain possession and push forward helped set the tone for a Warriors team that never backed away from the challenge.
Defensively, Pocomoke matched that effort with relentless determination. The Warriors consistently disrupted Crisfield’s attack and limited clean scoring opportunities for much of the contest. When the Crabbers mounted a late push in the closing minutes, Kendal Rayfield (12) came up with several key steals, helping shut down dangerous advances and preserve the lead.
When the final horn sounded, it was Pocomoke celebrating a hard-earned 2-1 victory and a regional championship. It was a win built on relentless pressure, timely scoring, and a complete team effort from start to finish.
With the victory, the Warriors advance to the MPSSAA State Quarterfinals. Their opponent and game location will be announced at a later date.
