SNOW HILL, MD — A steady rain and a slick field at Moe Barber Field at Kelly Shumate Stadium turned Friday night’s MPSSAA 1A East Regional Quarterfinal into a battle of ball security. In those conditions, Snow Hill proved to be the steadier team.
After forcing a Colonel Richardson punt on the game’s opening possession, the Eagles wasted little time taking control. A short completion to Keonte Taylor (#0) sparked Snow Hill’s first drive , powering his way into the end zone to give the Eagles an early lead.
Colonel Richardson’s next possession showed the challenges that would define much of the evening. Facing a determined Eagles defense, the Colonels turned the ball over on downs deep in Snow Hill territory.
Rain Creates Growing Challenge
By the end of the first quarter, the weather was becoming as much of a storyline as the football itself. Heavy rain continued to soak the field, with puddles beginning to form along portions of the playing surface.
Snow Hill adapted better to the conditions.
The Eagles marched downfield and extended their advantage when Caden Phillips (#12) connected on a field goal, pushing the lead to 10-0. Phillips’ kick capped another productive drive and highlighted what would become an impressive special teams performance.
On the ensuing kickoff, the slippery conditions nearly caused immediate trouble for Colonel Richardson. The returner managed to secure the ball, but the Colonels found themselves backed up deep in their own end of the field.
Defense Turns the Tide
If the weather created opportunities, Snow Hill’s defense was ready to capitalize.
Facing a third-and-seven situation, Colonel Richardson put the ball on the ground. Ayjion Manuel (#4) pounced on the fumble and returned it to the end zone, stretching the Eagles’ lead to 17-0 and energizing the home crowd.
The turnovers continued to mount.
Later in the half, another Colonels fumble was scooped up by Jonah Johnson (#14), who raced the other way for Snow Hill’s second defensive touchdown of the night. The Eagles suddenly found themselves firmly in command.
Johnson wasn’t finished making plays. He recovered yet another Colonel Richardson fumble later in the contest, setting up a touchdown by Mekhi Waters (#1) as Snow Hill’s lead ballooned to 31-0.
Eagles Keep Applying Pressure
While the wet conditions affected both teams, Snow Hill consistently avoided the costly mistakes that plagued the Colonels. The Eagles had their own moments handling the slippery football, but each time they were able to recover and keep drives alive.
Another Snow Hill touchdown increased the margin to 37-0 before the end of the third quarter, leaving little doubt about the outcome.
Meanwhile, Colonel Richardson continued to battle, but another first-and-ten fumble further reflected a difficult night of trying to operate in the relentless rain.
Finishing the Job
The final blow came courtesy of the player who opened the scoring.
Keonte Taylor (0) found the end zone once more to push the Eagles ahead 44-0, effectively sealing Snow Hill’s place in the next round of the postseason.
Fittingly, the game’s final minutes served as a summary of the entire evening. Another Colonel Richardson fumble gave Snow Hill prime field position. The Eagles attempted to get Phillips one more field goal opportunity before time expired, but the clock ran out before the kicking unit could take the field.
When the final whistle sounded, Snow Hill had turned a rainy November playoff contest into a dominant 44-0 victory.
Special Teams Shine
While the defense will earn much of the attention for forcing a series of game-changing turnovers, Snow Hill also received a standout performance from Caden Phillips (#12).
Phillips delivered a field goal, converted multiple extra points, and consistently pinned Colonel Richardson deep with strong kicks throughout the night. In a game where field position and ball security were critical, his special teams effort quietly helped set the tone for the Eagles’ quarterfinal victory.
Final Score
Snow Hill 44, Colonel Richardson 0
