SALISBURY, MD — Under the lights at Wicomico County Stadium on Friday evening, the Stephen Decatur Seahawks and Parkside Rams opened their Bayside Conference matchup with a defensive struggle before Decatur’s offense found its rhythm and gradually created separation on the scoreboard.
The Seahawks entered the contest at 7-1, while the Rams came in looking to build momentum at 5-3. For much of the opening quarter, however, records mattered little as both defenses set the tone.
Decatur received the opening kickoff but quickly found itself forced into a three-and-out after Parkside’s defense shut down an early drive. The Rams took over near midfield and appeared poised to capitalize when quarterback Tyler Gormley (7) connected deep enough to draw a pass interference penalty and move the chains.
Parkside advanced into Seahawks territory behind the running of Jamar Cropper (0), but a penalty and a fourth-down stop halted the drive before points could be put on the board.
The Seahawks answered with a promising possession of their own. A long completion from quarterback Chase Magnelli (14) to Jaxon Archer (1) moved the ball deep into Rams territory, but Parkside’s defense stiffened near the goal line and forced an incompletion on fourth down to regain possession.
As the first quarter progressed, Decatur began finding more success through the air. Several key completions moved the Seahawks into scoring position, and after converting a fourth-and-short opportunity, they marched inside the 10-yard line. Running back Bryce Baker (18) punched the ball across the goal line from nine yards out, and the extra point gave Decatur a 7-0 advantage with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter.
Parkside threatened to answer quickly when another deep throw by Gormley resulted in a defensive pass interference call that moved the Rams into Seahawks territory. A bad snap, however, disrupted the drive and left Parkside facing a long-yardage situation as the first quarter came to a close.
The Seahawks continued to build momentum in the second quarter.
With under three minutes remaining before halftime, Grayson Richardson (10) found the end zone to extend Decatur’s lead. After the successful extra point, the Seahawks held a 14-0 advantage and appeared firmly in control.
The Rams responded with their biggest play of the night.
Cropper took an outside run, found daylight along the sideline and raced approximately 74 yards for a touchdown, energizing the Parkside sideline and cutting into the deficit. The long run provided the Rams with a spark and kept the contest within reach heading into the latter stages of the half.
Decatur answered once again. Quarterback Magnelli and Jasir Jackson (3) connected for a touchdown reception that pushed the Seahawks’ lead back to two scores at 21-6.
Parkside had one final opportunity before halftime. A completion from Gormley to Tyler Phommachanh (8) moved the Rams into position for a potential scoring chance, but an incomplete pass near the sideline ended the threat as time expired.
Earlier in the half, Damion Miles (2) came away with an interception for Decatur, helping the Seahawks maintain control heading into the locker room.
The second half opened with the Seahawks continuing to capitalize on opportunities.
A touchdown pass to Jackson stretched the lead to 28-6 before Parkside mounted one of its strongest drives of the night. Gormley connected with Derrick Clark (1) on a 43-yard pass to move the Rams deep into Seahawks territory, then delivered another strike to Clark on fourth down for a 30-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 28-12.
Any momentum Parkside gained was short-lived.
Decatur responded with another explosive drive highlighted by a long completion to Archer before Baker scored his second touchdown of the game. The successful extra point extended the Seahawks’ lead to 35-12.
The game then turned decisively in Decatur’s favor when Jaxon Scott (16) jumped in front of a Parkside receiver, intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The pick-six, followed by the extra point, pushed the score to 42-12 and effectively put the game out of reach.
Despite the deficit, the Rams continued to battle. Gormley delivered several notable completions throughout the evening, including passes of 21 yards to Phommachanh, 33 yards to Clark and another 43-yard strike to Clark that helped set up Parkside’s second-half touchdown.
In the end, Decatur’s combination of timely defensive plays, big passing gains and a strong rushing effort from Baker proved too much to overcome. The Seahawks left Wicomico County Stadium with a 42-12 victory, improving their record while Parkside was left searching for answers after flashes of offensive promise were overshadowed by turnovers and missed opportunities.
For much of the night, Parkside showed it could create big plays. Decatur, however, consistently answered every challenge, turning key moments into points and steadily pulling away as the evening unfolded.
