SALISBURY, MD — What was expected by many to be a comfortable night for Parkside turned into something entirely different Friday evening at Wicomico County Stadium.

For nearly four quarters, North Caroline refused to play the role of underdog. The Bulldogs matched Parkside’s speed, capitalized on opportunities, and repeatedly answered every challenge thrown their way. Instead of a runaway victory, fans were treated to a tense, momentum-swinging contest that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.

Parkside struck first when Jamar Cropper (#0) broke free on a long touchdown run early in the opening quarter, giving the Rams a quick 7-0 advantage after the extra point. North Caroline wasted little time responding. Quinten Doyle found the end zone on a rushing touchdown of his own, trimming the deficit to 7-6 after the conversion attempt failed.

Back and Forth

The Bulldogs continued to build confidence as the game progressed. A steady rushing attack moved North Caroline down the field before Makai DeShields (#1) powered across the goal line. Zahaven Holland added the two-point conversion, putting the visitors in front 14-7.

Parkside answered through the air when Tyler Phommachanh hauled in a deep touchdown pass to pull the Rams within one point. But every time it appeared Parkside might seize control, North Caroline had another response ready. Chris Lagman scored on the ground to extend the Bulldogs’ lead, and North Caroline carried a surprising 20-13 advantage into halftime.

Penalties prove costly

The third quarter became a story of opportunities, momentum shifts, and missed chances. Penalties proved costly throughout the night, including a spectacular one-handed reception by Derrick Clark that appeared destined to be one of the game’s signature moments before an illegal formation penalty erased the play.

Parkside eventually found its footing behind Cropper. The Rams’ standout back broke free for another rushing touchdown before a successful kick tied the game at 20-20. Yet North Caroline continued taking advantage of favorable field position, aided in part by Parkside’s repeated onside-kick attempts.

After recovering another short kickoff and driving deep into Rams territory, the Bulldogs punched the ball across the goal line and finally converted a two-point attempt after multiple penalties and repeated tries, moving ahead 28-20.

Parkside shows resilience

Just when North Caroline appeared to have command, Parkside responded again. Cropper powered the Rams down to the one-yard line, and quarterback Thomas Gormley finished the drive with a rushing touchdown. Cropper added the two-point conversion, knotting the score at 28-28 as the third quarter came to an end.

The game took another turn early in the fourth.

After Parkside’s defense forced a punt, Cropper needed only one play to change the momentum completely. The explosive running back broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run, giving the Rams their first lead since the opening quarter. A missed kick left the score at 34-28, leaving the door open for another North Caroline answer.

The Bulldogs delivered exactly that.

DeShields crossed the goal line for his second touchdown of the night, and the extra point restored North Caroline’s advantage at 35-34 with less than four minutes remaining.

You can feel it in the stadium

By this point, the atmosphere inside Wicomico County Stadium had shifted from anticipation to nervous excitement. Every possession felt critical, and both teams understood one mistake could decide the outcome.

Parkside’s final answer came from the player who had carried the offense throughout the evening. With approximately 1:30 remaining, Cropper found the end zone once more. The successful extra point pushed the Rams ahead 41-35 and brought the home crowd to its feet.

Time runs out

North Caroline’s offense took the field one last time with no timeouts and the game hanging in the balance. The Bulldogs moved urgently but were unable to find the breakthrough they needed. An incomplete pass with 25 seconds remaining effectively ended the threat, and Parkside was able to run out the clock as chants echoed from the home stands.

For a team expected to win comfortably, the Rams were forced to earn every yard and every point. North Caroline’s physical rushing attack and resilience turned the contest into a four-quarter fight, while Parkside’s ability to adjust, particularly by abandoning its aggressive onside-kick strategy and kicking deep in the second half, helped swing momentum back in its favor.

In the end, it was a game that looked nothing like a mismatch and felt much more like a playoff atmosphere in the middle of the regular season.

Final: Parkside 41, North Caroline 35
