CRISFIELD, MD. — For nearly half an hour, the MPSSAA 1A East II Quarterfinal between Crisfield and Cambridge looked destined to become a defensive battle where one mistake could decide everything. Instead, a pair of penalty kicks opened the floodgates as the Crisfield Crabbers pulled away for a 5-0 victory over the Cambridge Vikings Tuesday evening at Crisfield High School.

Despite the final score, the match was far more competitive than the scoreboard suggested.

Both teams spent the opening minutes trading possession and searching for opportunities in a physical, hard-fought contest. Neither side could find a breakthrough as defenders on both ends stood strong and scoring chances remained limited.

That changed in the 27th minute.

After Cambridge was whistled for a penalty inside the box, Connor Haynie (20) stepped to the spot and calmly converted to give the Crabbers a 1-0 lead.

Before the Vikings could recover, another trip into the Cambridge penalty area led to a second penalty just four minutes later. Once again, Haynie was called upon, and once again he delivered, burying his second penalty kick of the match to extend Crisfield’s advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime.

Crisfield continued the pressure after the break.

About 13 minutes into the second half, the Crisfield appeared poised to increase the deficit when a free kick opportunity outside the box led to the ball finding the back of the net. However, officials ruled the play dead, determining the ball had been put into play before the whistle, wiping away what would have been Crisfield’s third goal of the evening.

Moments later, Crisfield’s attack found another level. Cooper Thomas (2) created a scoring opportunity and connected with Aiden Martin (7), who finished the play to make it 3-0. Martin is able to score again within minutes.

The duo strikes again soon after.

With momentum firmly on the Crabbers’ side, Thomas once more delivered the setup and Martin once more supplied the finish, pushing the lead even further and putting the game out of reach.

As the clock wound down, Cambridge continued to battle and managed to keep the final 19 minutes scoreless despite facing constant pressure. Meanwhile, Crisfield began rotating starters out of the lineup, protecting key players while securing the postseason victory.

When the final whistle sounded, the Crabbers had completed a convincing 5-0 win, earning a spot in the next round of the state tournament.

Crisfield now advances to face the Snow Hill Eagles on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Snow Hill with a chance to continue its postseason run.
