BERLIN, MD — Entering Saturday’s MPSSAA 3A East II Girls Soccer Semifinal, both teams brought impressive résumés to Stephen Decatur High School. The Seahawks finished the regular season at 10-0-2, while Arundel entered at 9-2-1. In a matchup between two of the region’s top programs, Stephen Decatur used timely scoring and strong defensive play to earn a 2-1 victory and advance to the regional championship.
Arundel came out aggressively and spent much of the opening half applying pressure in the attacking third. The Wildcats generated several scoring opportunities, but the Seahawks’ Harper Jerns (00) repeatedly rose to the challenge with a series of key saves.
Seahawks Strike First
Following a race down the field, Stephen Decatur earned a penalty kick after a foul was called inside the box. Up to that point, the Seahawks had struggled to generate consistent pressure against the Arundel defense, making the opportunity even more important.
Lamis Omar (7) stepped to the penalty spot and calmly converted, giving Decatur a 1-0 advantage and shifting momentum in favor of the home team.
Arundel continued to test the Decatur defense, but the score remained 1-0 through halftime.
Continued Pressure From Both Sides
The pressure did not let up after the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, Arundel threatened again, only to be denied by another strong save from Decatur’s keeper. The stop proved crucial as the Seahawks soon found a way to capitalize on one of their best opportunities of the afternoon.
The Seahawks continued to push forward and extended their lead roughly seven minutes later. Mina Nordstrom (20) found the back of the net to make it 2-0, providing a valuable cushion against a Wildcat squad that had controlled stretches of play throughout the match.
Wildcats Push Late, Decatur Holds On
Arundel refused to go away quietly. The Wildcats responded when Arundel’s offense unleashed a shot from approximately 30 yards out that sailed past the goalkeeper and into the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and setting up a tense finish.
In the closing minutes, Arundel increased the pressure and pushed players forward in search of the equalizer. Every possession carried added urgency as the Wildcats looked for one final breakthrough.
Stephen Decatur remained composed under the pressure. The Seahawks effectively managed the clock, limited quality chances, and protected their one-goal advantage until the final whistle.
With the hard-fought 2-1 victory, Stephen Decatur advances to the MPSSAA 3A East II Regional Championship, moving one step closer to a state tournament berth.
